Activist, author, and physicist Dr. Vandana Shiva has penned an open letter to India Prime Minister Modi and US President Obama making the case for seed freedom for farmers and food democracy for all. While India has relatively strong laws protecting rights of nature and people and their relationship to seeds, the US has ceded undue power to corporations to patent seeds, call them “inventions,” restrict farmers’ rights to use them, and collect royalties when farmers plant their seeds. If the US succeeds in pressuring India to adopt an approach similar to the US, it will be a disaster for citizens globally.
